Meet Marcus M. Aquino, MD, FACS, FASCRS

Marcus Aquino, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a trusted colon/rectal and hernia surgeon who has cared for residents of the Texas Medical Center and those of the Galveston Bay area for more than 30 years. He completed his basic surgical training certification (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. After a 5 year general surgery residency at the New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens in Flushing, where he was Chief Surgical Resident, Dr. Aquino was accepted into a competitive fellowship program, finishing his advanced colorectal surgery fellowship training at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Maryland.

Staying abreast of the latest advancements in medicine is important for Dr. Aquino. Consequently, he maintains board certification with the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr. Aquino is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS).

Initially trained in the very reliable Shouldice mesh-free repair for inguinal (groin) hernias, Dr. Aquino later acquired expertise in the Lichtenstein tension-free mesh repair method. He is experienced in the use of both synthetic and biological meshes for hernia repair. Dr. Aquino also has advanced training in the reconstruction of complex incisional, recurrent, and colostomy hernias.

Dr. Aquino uses modern minimally invasive surgical techniques, employing the da Vinci® robot whenever possible, to provide precise and effective results. These surgical solutions reduce postoperative pain and result in a rapid return to work and normal activities.

Most of his surgery is done in an outpatient setting as this has been shown to be both cost effective and well accepted by patients. Whenever possible, special long acting local anesthetic techniques are used to maximize patient comfort.

Dr. Aquino has performed over 15,000 ColonRectal and hernia surgeries over the last 30 years. His patients trust and appreciate his dedication to high-quality, individualized patient care. He spends time explaining their medical issues to his patients in simple language so that they can make educated decisions regarding their treatment options. Dr. Aquino is famous for drawing a picture to make things clearer. He is known for placing great emphasis on a warm and friendly relationship with his patients, often employing a tactful combination of dry humor and empathy.

Coming from many generations of doctors, his family crest bears the latin motto “Sedo et Sano”, which translates....”Soothe and Heal”.
