What is colitis?

Colitis (and Proctitis) basically means inflammation of your colon and/or rectum. There are many reasons why this may happen, but the most important in this discussion is of the type that is related to your immune system attacking the bowel.

How do I know if I have it?

You will have abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea, usually with mucus mixed in. (think blowing your nose in the commode when you have an upper respiratory infection).

How is it diagnosed?

Dr. Aquino will usually perform a colonoscopy where he takes biopsies to confirm the diagnosis. This will also show how severe the condition is. In addition, he will order stool and blood tests and on occasion, specialized X-Rays.

How is it treated?

Most of the time the inflammation will respond to oral medicines. Initially, medication enemas may be prescribed. If the medications fail to work, Dr. Aquino will consider surgery.
