What is Pilonidal Disease?

There are hair glands running down the middle of your spine leading to the tailbone.  Some people tend to get ingrown hairs at this site which get infected, usually with a Staph.  When this happens, the pore gets clogged and an abscess (pus pocket) will form under the skin, swell up painfully and cause fever/chills/sweats.

How is Pilonidal Disease treated?

Usually, a short course of antibiotics will be prescribed, and if an abscess is present, it will be lanced to let out the pus.  Once the inflammation has settled (2-3 weeks), your doctor will set you up for a short, day surgery where the infected glands are totally removed.
