Rectocele

Rectocele

If you notice your rectum pushing forward as a vaginal bulge, you are probably dealing with a Rectocele.

With the help of board certified surgeon, Marcus Aquino, MD, FACS, FASCRS, you can undergo effective correction of this problem at ColoProctology Associates & nasaHernia in Seabrook Texas.  Book your exam for Rectocele through the website or call the office to schedule over the phone today.

Why do I have Rectocele?

As we get older, the vaginal wall gets thinner and weaker, allowing the rectum just behind it to bulge forward and sometimes out through the vaginal opening.   Thus Rectocele is usually associated with:

  • Older age
  • Post menopausal women, especially with a history of multiple, difficult childbirths
  • Chronic straining (constipation frequent diarrhea, coughing etc.)
  • Pelvic nerve damage
  • Neuropathy from Diabetes.

When should I see a doctor for Rectocele?

If you notice your rectum bulging into your vagina, you should probably make an appointment to be seen.  This condition progresses slowly, so there is no urgency. Dr. Aquino at ColoProctology Associates & nasaHernia will complete a workup and recommend appropriate treatment.

How is Rectocele treated?

Most of the time, depending on the extent of the bulge, Dr. Aquino will recommend a surgery where the back wall of the vagina is reinforced with a biologic mesh, holding the rectum back in it's normal location.  The pelvic floor muscles are tightened and suspended at the same time. This is done from “below” so you can leave the hospital the next morning.
